GG,
Varnish is a lousy filler. It just tends to magnify what is already there.
I would start with 80 grit through the epoxy to the glass, do your patches, then move to 150 and finally 220.
Wet sanding is more for between varnish coats 4 and 5.
Remember, it's all gonna get bunged-up again anyway. We're just trying to keep the water out of the wood.
