Though dealing with thin material, have you considered doing the diamond or dovetail spline as an inlay using a template and a Dremel type tool to inlet the spline approximately half way through the thickness of the material. Though it would require milling the backside of the actual spline down to half its thickness, I would think that it would be even stronger (yet flexible) once the spline was epoxied into place in the cutout. This technique actually works quite well with solid wood but I would imagine it to be relatively failproof using a lamminated substance (hence, no wood movement). Just a thought.
