Matt: I'm in the process of building a Chesapeak 17. My manual addresses this problem, indicating placing spacers in the area to fair the hull. Mine has about 1/4" space. I filled this w/ epoxy/wood filler and intend to paint the bottom. I don't think you'll have any problems as CLC seems to be aware of an apparent flaw in the panel sizing.
