I would not hesitate to use a saber saw for cutting out deck hatches. But rather than putting the tape on the base of the saw, I would put the tape on the deck to make my cut line more visible. Plus, I would use a down stroke cutting blade made for laminate cutting to seriously reduce the possiblity of lifting the wood grain or glass.
