hull paint questions

Just finished priming the hull on my first build, used Interlux pre-kote primer and found it darn near impossible to get a smooth coat. I tried a foam roller, a foam brush, paint pad. What do you veterans use to apply paint?? I want to find the best combo before I put on the Color.. My first Chesapeake 17 is turning out Outstanding ,this is fun thanks for all the forum help John J
