That would work, but on the whole I prefer gluing shaped wooden blocks because they're about half the weight of an epoxy endpour (not to mention that epoxy is $0.70 an ounce). My thought was to bed a 3/4 inch thick block in an epoxy/woodflour putty, which would give those sides you mention a good bit of reinforcement, too.
