You can try mixing epoxy and saw dust, but in my experience it still comes out a lot darker. You might try taking a piece of veneer off a scrap and seeing if you can trim it to lay into the space. Thickened epoxy can still fill the kerf, with a piece of veneer laying on top and it should be nearly invisible.

I guess it depends on how big of a notch we're talking about, and how much patience you have with that sort of fiddling around.
