What kind of boat are you looking for - for you or the boy or something to share?
Taking a skim of the kits that are available here the only one I saw for $750 is the Chesapeake 14, but that price doesn't include paint, varnish, sandpaper, gloves, masking tape, etc. Not sure if that includes shipping, either. If your total budget is a hard $750, I think you're going to have to build from plans.
