Epoxy on vynel ester

I have recently purchased a small unfinished row boat. It currently has a outer coat of vynel ester resin with ecloth fiberglass underneith. To finish the creator told me to finish with vynel ester. However, after some research it is just as expensive as epoxy and it seems from all I have read that epoxy is much better. My question is that has anyone tried using epoxy resin on top of vynel ester resin either as a finishing coat or a repair or for another coat of e glass? can this be done? I have heard positives so far but no one that I have heard from has actually done it.
