Just wondering why only the bottom (#1) strakes of the wherry are glassed on the outside, but #s 1 and 2 are covered on the inside. Wouldn't extra glass on the outside protect against wear and tear? Thanks in advnce.
Having just recently finished a wherry, I can give one reason. On the outside of the hull, it would be very difficult to get the fiberglass to jump up and over the strake edge between the 1st and 2nd strakes, without the glass lifting off the surface and creating long air gaps. I learned this the hard way since I didn't trim the glass to exact fit prior to putting on the epoxy, and it was tough to get it to lay flat at the junction of the strakes.
