Epoxy and fiberglas on varnish?
I want to put an extra reinforcement on the keel of my kayak of fiberglass and epoxy.
is it nessesary to take off the varnish coat first or can I just sand and aply on top of the varnish?

Hi Bob, thanks for the reply, the sandy beaches here at the costa brava seem to like varnish , I noticed the 5 layer coat I put on is already gone on some parts of the keel. ( 8 times going out)
I was thinking of putting on a carbon fiber strip with an epoxy carbon powder mix.
maybe I will just have to use a better varnish, two component?

CLC sells a handy kit for this. I scraped my Merganser down to the glass on a concrete ramp. I applied the CLC kit and have seen no damage after three years of hard use. Photos and description at http://twofootartist.com/merganser-construction-notes/ Scroll to July 2010 entries. -Wes

Yep, there's some sanding in your future. As a general rule two part systems go on before one part systems. If you don't mind my asking why are you needing reinforcement?
