I want to paint the lower hull to highlight it. Shoud this be painted prior to the epoxy? Or, shoud it be painted after the epoxy and prior to the varnish?
Are you talking about paint or stain? They are two different things. You use stain on the wood prior to glass/epoxy, then varnish. With stain, you still see the wood grain but it has a different color. Stained Petrel Play below.
Paint is applied after glass/epoxy intead of varnish. It completely hides the wood grain (and cosmetic woodworking mistakes). Ch17LT with painted hull:
