dreher sculls in open oarlocks
given that the drehers are a delight and designed for the high performance setup to be found in the sliding seat sulling configuration, some thoughts please on their use with the 3-inch open bronze oarlocks.
since they will not fit the oarlocks fitted out with plastic port and starboard "buttons/sleeves" my first thought would be how to protect them as they are used in plain old aging-butt rowing.
thin, popsicle-stick sized wooden pieces taped to the oars where they pass through and rub on the oarlocks? magic fairy dust?
i also have a set of "woodies". no problem there.
thanks.

Wrap them in leather or rope. Not only would that be traditional, it'd would offer better protection than wood.
What you're looking for is to eliminate point concentrations of pressure. Something resilient will not only do that, but if you have a sudden impact it will absorb the energy before it gets to the oar.
If you use rope, you can also make a decorative knot that serves as a button.
Have fun,
