Kaholo - fiberglassing the deck with tape

Hi there,

I've seen blog posts, where builders used blue tape where the cloth overhang should stop, taking off the tape and cutting the glass with the epoxy still green.
I kind of like this idea, but I was wondering how long would be the window for removing the tape, is 10-12 hours already too much?

RE: Kaholo - fiberglassing the deck with tape

Hi Dagi,

10 to 12 hours is probably too much....at normal temps (70 to 80 degrees) for most of the epoxy brands (and slow or fast hadener) that i work with - including MAS.

its best to develop some experience with your epoxy at temperatures you monitor (i keep a thermometer in my shop).but i would say at 70 to 80 degrees is going to be somewhere between 2 hours and 4 hours.

again, best to do some experiments so you can know with some confidence about how long it will take.

that said, whenever i do a step like this....i always stick around to montior it carefully.  a light touch that with a gloved finger that comes back with no wet epoxy is when you want to start the cutting......

i don't take the chance of taking a drive or long trip banking on some time.

hope this helped.

Thanks hspira,

I took the risk, since I had to go away 3 hours after glassing and came back 10.5 hours after glassing.

After 3 hours the glass didn't yet stick, but pulled away.
After 10.5 hours lifting the tape and cutting the glass worked ok, I guess 1-2 hours before, it would have worked even better.
2 hours later would have definitely been too late.

Temperature was about 65 degrees

The ideal window for removing tape and trimming epoxy in its green state is typically 4–8 hours after application, depending on the epoxy type, temperature, and humidity. At 10–12 hours, the epoxy may be too hard to cut cleanly, especially if curing conditions are warm.
