NED trailer questions

I recently acquired a Northeast Dory and I'm looking for the best trailer configurations for taking it on the road and launching. I have a tilt bed trailer under it now but need to modify it to fit the boat better. Any advice would be appreciated.

RE: NED trailer questions

The boat is so relatively light that I've found no need for rollers.  For mine, I used a carpet covered wide board (pressure treated lumber), about 4 ft long (wide) to go athwartships under ther forward part of the boat - maybe it was a 2x10 or 2x12, placed on edge somewhere under about where the mast step is or first seat is.  I cut a support shape into it (a flat bottomed V), dimensions and angles will be dependent upon the exact fore/aft placement of the board under the boat.  Something like this, with stainless eyebolts screwed into each end for a hold-down strap:

     ___________                                                                ___________

O--|                       \                                                         /                         |--O

     |                              \_____________________ /                                |

     |_____________________________________________________|

Then under the after portion of the boat I have two side by side, carpet covered longitudinal boards (2x4's) about 4 ft long, set up about 12 or 16 inches apart from each other.  The boards are parrallel to the skeg, the after portion of the boards are on each side of the keel skeg.  They are as far apart as possible, just so that the back end of the boards are set full width of the flat portion of the bottom of the boat.  This spread will be dependent upon exactly how far forward or aft the boat is when it sets on the trailer (how much of the stern is non-supported), which in my case the aft end of the boards is about a foot forward of the lower edge of the transom.

You will have to figure out U-bolts or brackets or whatever to connect boards to trailer, dependent upon your set up.

The bow of my trailer has a "standard" ratchet winch on a post, with a roller that touches the bow just below the height of the bow eye on the boat.

This set up works fine for me, and saved a lot of money on extra trailer parts (rollers, etc.).

RE: NED trailer questions

After posting, I see that the right hand side of my digrm suffered some spacing issues.

Also, I forgot to note that I used a hand power-planer or belt sander to cut a slight concavity into the longitudinal boards to match the rocker curve in the bottom of the boat.
