WoodenBoat Sept/Oct 2007 (issue 198) has a very good article about one form of proper rowing technique referred to as the 'dory stroke'. A key component is blade orientation with the surface of the water as you go through the stroke. This issue is available for purchase on-line from WoodenBoat.
I am eager for warmer weather so that I can try it out.
