Thanks for the insight. I've decided to try the round mast. I found web instructions on birdsmouth construction and will make it this way. It looks like fun and since I have lots of pine shelves with bits of knots I should be able to get all my spars/masts/booms from this. I've become pretty good at making skarf joints! I've modified the boom to use a u shaped end rather than a gooseneck so that should avoid the problem with damaging the gooseneck. It looks good and is way stronger than I need. I really could have made it smaller. Anyone made wooden cleats?
