Copper most definitely will get hotter than wood in the sun, simply because it is a good conductor. I've accidentally touched metal in the desert and given myself 2nd degree burns, where I was leaning against a piece of wood with no problems.
I'd be more concerned about the temperature differences causing it to expand and contract, thus creating points of weakness in the epoxy/glass where water can seep into the surrounding wood. Also, copper looks great polished, and it looks good oxidized, but might not look as good in the interim, or oxidized near the wood.
