Just note that Paul Caffyn, when circumnavigating Australia, changed from a skeg to a rudder and claimed at least a 10% increase in distance a day.
Basically a skeg is a failed rudder !!!!! Also note the problems Freya had with her skeg when circumnavigating the South Island of New Zealand - gravel jamming it so it would not deploy. It appears to be a common complaint. As for strength of rudders, I lift my kayak fully loaded, using the rudder as a handle.
