Fit of centerboard in trunk on NE Dory
Hi all ---
I have some concerns about the loosness of the fit of the centerboard in its trunk on the dory I'm working on. The trunk has a 1" wide slot -- the centerboard is 3/4 ". That seems pretty loose and would be banging around when the boat is under sail. I'm considering adding a couple of thin strips at the top of the centerboard to make the fit a bit tighter -- leaving about 1/8" of play. Thoughts?

Not to worry. You need that addtional space. The pressure put on the dadder board while sailing will take care of any slack. When on a beat, you'll have a hard time pulling it up I suspect.

I had the same concern but settled on the idea CLC knows what it’s doing. Turns out the extra space is a good thing. When underway lateral pressure wedges the board in place and the extra space allows easy retraction when it gets fouled with rocks and mud. There is a little thunk on tacking that is kind of comforting. Same is true with the mast and mast partner, lateral loads lock it in.
