Is there a recommended way to increase the main sail size?

My initial thought is to lengthen the boom by about 24", leaving the mast alone.
Increasing sail size by 29% and moving the balance of the rig aft.

Wouldn't that adversely affect performance? I think you might end up battling a lot of weather helm.
