"I FINALLY Built Myself a Kayak!"

Paul Jackman loves to build things with wood and share his creations in engaging and informative videos on YouTube. He currently has about 400,000 followers on his JackmanWorks page. (Perhaps you saw his video about building a CLC Teardrop Camper.) Paul has built many things, but one thing he has wanted to build since high school was a boat.

When the time came to build that boat, he returned to CLC and chose our Wood Duck Hybrid kayak. Many of Paul’s creations are built with recycled lumber, particularly wood from shipping pallets. Instead of the standard selection of cedar strips that we provide, Paul made his deck from pallet wood. He honored that decision by naming the boat, PALLET DUCK.

If you are thinking about building a kayak from a CLC kit, that kit will come with a MAS epoxy kit with sufficient epoxy hardener and resin to complete your project. The kit also includes pumps, Cell-O-Fill thickener for filling seams, and wood flour that mixes with the epoxy to create that peanut-butter-like mixture that glues the boat together.

We have a supplies list of the expendable items needed to build your boat. We can supply you with nitrile gloves, fillet tools, mixing cups, syringes, pastry bags, squeegees,  brushes,  and rollers, which are necessary equipment when mixing any epoxy.  We also sell Titebond glue and CA (cyanoacrylate) super glue, pliers, block planes, bevel gauges, and clamps that you will need to finish your kit.

Paul stressed the importance of sanding the boat throughout the building process. CLC sells respirators, ear protection, sanding blocks, and sandpaper rolls and discs. After all that sanding, comes the finishing. Though you may decide to apply fewer than 18 coats of varnish, as Paul did, if you want that much varnish, we have it. We sell finishing kits that include a quart of Interlux Schooner gloss or Goldspar satin Varnish, and a supply of brushes and rollers. We also have a full selection of Interlux paints and primers.

These are the products we use to build our boats. We are happy to help you build yours. If you have any questions, please call  (410-267-0137) or email us.
