Built a Severn a few years ago. 3mm. I was having a difficult time bringing the two halves together at the bow. I thought if i put a 4 inch "c" clamp on each half I would have two really nice handles to grab as I pulled them together. Well I got them just about together when one got loose and hit me in the belly. WOW. What a suprise. Thank goodness it didn't hit a little lower. If I was using 4mm it probably would have been a trip to the hospital for internal injuries. I no longer call it a "stressed panel" construction. It is a "WAY stressed panel" construction.
