Paint varnish and primer?

I am just getting to the stage where I will be finishing my mill creek 16.5. I want to paint part of the hull and varnish the rest. Any tips on how to do this right? Do I overlap varnish on paint at the edges or paint overlap varnish? Or should there be a distinct line between the two with minimal contact. Also, what is the role of primer? Does everybody use it under paint? Does it have to be a specific marine primer, or will any oil based sandable primer do? Thanks.
