Why John really was up that pole:

I'm busy. I have 8 days of work left, 29 days till retirement, 47 days till the wedding..........that's plenty.....The boat (s) are just sitting there.   

I'm haven't been here for a long time, so it's certainly not my fault.  I'd like to have been on the water like John, but we don't have as much water out here as they do back there.
