Advice on attaching rudder on NE Dory

I've got a NE Dory with a balanced lug rig. It's nice because the rig fits inside the boat and one can  easily switch from rowing to sailing. Except for the rudder. Is there any way to mount the rudder while underway? I can't seem to do it--the angle of the transom is too great.

RE: Advice on attaching rudder on NE Dory

Your post over on the Woodenboat forum garnered several responses, all of which are practical solutions to this small inconvenience.

Fitting a small sternpost ought to be pretty easy, from which a slightly modified rudder can be hung.

Or build a kick-up for those times when each hand's on an oar, leaving nothing for the tiller.

It's a little awkward to be sure, but it can be done. Hold the top of the rudder firmly with your left hand and place your right forefinger underneath the lower pintle. Now put the rudder over the transom, get your head out over the stern so you can see, and use your finger tip to guide the lower pintle into position. Jockey the upper one over its hole. And drop the savage into place. Practice makes perfect. But get your practice in relatively calm water!
