Grain Root - Longboard

Aptly named to represent where Grain began, the Root continues to be one of our most popular boards. This nimble pintail is our version of a performance-style longboard, meaning it’s designed with speed generation and maneuverability in mind, while remaining a super fun cruiser of mellow surf. The Root excels in a myriad of conditions, having the speed and control to handle zippier beach breaks or the bigger stuff—plus the volume to catch all the waves you want on a small day. While Grain has grown quite a bit from our roots, this Root remains a dominant classic.

The Root features a moderate rocker, allowing for later and steeper drops than a log. Full volume in the center provides the float you need to paddle with ease, while the tapered, down rails bite into steeper faces, generate speed when you need it, and encourage quick transitions from rail to rail. A slight concave under the nose creates lift to help when riding in the front, begging for a cheater five, or (for the better balancers) a full ten over. The Root pairs a pulled in tail with a “V” bottom, the key to its at-will reactiveness when surfing from the back of the board. Finally, we like to keep a crisp, tucked edge right at the tail to release and plane, projecting the Root out of turns and down the line.

The original surfboards were wood, and a well-built wooden board will feel solid underfoot but also transmit a pleasing softness like nothing you’ve ever experienced on a 'glass and foam board. Wave after wave you’ll find new ways to praise its qualities. Quite simply, Grain Surfboard kits are a perfect blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern performance. Grain Surfboard kits are manufactured by hand using predominately Northern White Cedar, with some Western Red Cedar thrown in for color. White Cedar is super light, extremely rot-resistant and beautiful to look at. What else could you ask for when building a surfboard? The natural qualities of these tight-grained woods ensure durability, strength, and lightweight rideability for many years. Like all CLC boat kits, Grain Surfboards are sheathed in fiberglass and coated in epoxy for a lifetime of hard use without the headache of old-fashioned woodenboat maintenance.

Every Grain Surfboard kit comes with everything you need to build your own board, including CNC-cut keel and frames, hand-cut top and bottom planks, rail strips, fin box, glue, epoxy, fiberglass, mixing buckets, gloves, and a detailed instruction manual. These kits are designed to be built by anyone with the room to do it.
