Overview

The Mill Creek 16.5 Hybrid differs from the original in that a cedar-strip deck is substituted for the standard okoume plywood deck.  It's a "hybrid" because it combines a stitch-and-glue hull with a cedar-strip deck.

We've been seeing Mill Creeks with cedar strip decks for years as skilled builders made the substitution.  We've always admired the results, and when our colleague John Peck built a Mill Creek 16.5 this way himself, we digitized the patterns for the deck molds and made the "hybrid" option available to everyone.

The Mill Creek Hybrid’s hull is identical to the standard Mill Creek’s, with computer-cut BS 1088 Okoume panels that go together very quickly.  Computer-cut molds are set into the hull with temporary hot glue.  These molds shape and support the deck during construction.  With the kit, we include 50% Western Red and 50% Alaskan Yellow cedar strips.  The strips are milled with a “bead and cove” joint so that one slides into the next for perfect joinery.

The Mill Creek 16.5 Hybrid is a little more challenging to build than the standard model but will reward the patient builder with a unique heirloom kayak.

Both Mill Creek 16.5 models share the same enormously versatile hull and cockpit. Not only can you paddle it as a single or a double, but you can sail it or even add a sliding seat unit to create an ocean shell. The Mill Creek 16.5's stability will reassure the most nervous paddlers, while the low freeboard and lightweight yield better speed and handling in wind than the average canoe. There's enough capacity for camping gear (with optional deck hatches), and the boat can be easily trimmed by sliding the standard seats fore and aft on their mounts.

The Mill Creek 16.5 can also become a great sliding-seat rower with our Drop-in Rowing Unit installed. Check out the installation drawings.

What builders are saying

Yahoo!  The Mill Creek 16.5 Hybrid is finished, it floats and it is beautiful.  This has been my dream boat for as long as I can remember.  We have used it every weekend since launching and I hope to keep it up for as long as I can. I took my daughter to paddle at Lake Berryessa, CA.  I was so excited to paddle it that I forgot the seats. Thank you CLC for a great design, and a great kit.

I started building my Mill Creek 16.5 Hybrid kayak around May 25th, 2017, and launched the Kayak on June, 7th, 2017; a two-week project. As a pastor of a small church here in Minnesota, I used it as a youth project where our teens could come as they were available to learn and work on it. It was a great kit, good fun, and a learning experience for all! Thank you, CLC

Stopped for dinner on the American River in Sacramento, California, in my newly completed Mill Creek 16.5 Hybrid. It doesn't get better than this. Thanks for an awesome experience and for the guidance along the way.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I order this kit?

Click on the Buying Options tab the top left of this page and follow the directions.

If I buy one of your boat kits, what else will I need?

Chesapeake Light Craft kits contain all the parts and materials you need to build the boat. The kit includes pre-cut parts, hardware, epoxy, fiberglass, plans and instructions. Our standard kayak kits also have the seats, hatches, bulkheads, footbraces, and the deck-rigging. About the only thing kits don't include is the final finish: paint or varnish. Your boat's color scheme is entirely up to you.

You'll need a few ordinary tools, like a cordless drill, a decent 5-inch sander, and for most boats a wood plane. You'll need disposables such as sandpaper and paint brushes and mixing cups.

You need a workspace a couple of feet bigger all the way around than the boat you want to build, and you'll need to be able to maintain temperatures between about 55 degrees F and 95 degrees F during steps when epoxy is being applied or curing. Since a lot of boatbuilding gets done during winter, we've written up some tips on how to heat a cold space cheaply, easily, and safely.

How much does this boat weigh and how much can it carry?

The weight and payload of this boat, along with other statistics such length and beam, can be found under Specs in the Specifications section, which is just below the lead image seen at the top of this page.

Can you send me the plans digitally?

Sorry, but until digital rights management technology for marine architectural work catches up to that used for books and music, we are unable to transmit digital plans. Currently, only study plans and manuals can be sent digitally.
