Toggles for Kayaks
The plans for many of our touring kayaks show a loop of line at bow and stern for carrying handles. This is the simplest approach and brutally strong, but hard on the hands for long carries. We’ve retrofitted many of our boats with simple toggles, made from a chunk of leftover sheerclamp or scrap wood.
- Round over a 4" length of wood so it’s comfortable in the hand and drill a 3/8” hole in the middle.
- Knot 1/4" line through the toggle and through the bow and stern of your kayak.
- When paddling in waves, the toggle can rattle against the hull. Use a tab of velcro to secure the toggle to the deck while on the water.
You can also install one of our Kayak Toggles or a Fancy Grab Handle to easily carry your kayak.
