Overview

After we observed several clever builders making half-scale Eastport Prams to use as Cradle Boats for babies, we decided to make up a proper kit.

This is a great gift for new moms and dads!

At 47" long, the CLC Cradle Boat is an exact 50% replica of the Eastport Pram. The hulls are identical in nearly every way, especially the hull shape. The construction process is very similar. We've tweaked the interior to better suit the little ones, who won't need a rowing seat and daggerboard trunk just yet.

The CLC Cradle Boat wins first place for "easiest kit in our catalog." We've gone to great pains to limit the number of hours and amount of skill required. All the parts are cut on our computer and fit together perfectly. We've drilled the holes for you where temporary "stitches" of copper wire hold the boat's handsome shape while you epoxy the planks. Bulkheads drop into slots, so no measuring.

No need for fiberglass, so you're spared that step during construction. Even without the fiberglass reinforcement, the Cradle Boat is sturdy enough to get banged around the way things do in houses with kiddies. We estimate it will take you about 30 hours to do a first-class construction. Plans builders get full-sized patterns for every part.

CLC Cradle Boat Mattress PatternThe rockers have a gentle slope so those pint-sized sailors snoozing aboard can enjoy the easy motion. Recognizing that little sailors soon become bigger sailors, the CLC Cradle Boat's rockers can be turned around in moments to create a solid (non-rocking) base. Now your Cradle Boat is a lovely place to store pillows or stuffed animals or toys. Your cats may decide it is the bed they have always deserved.

Likewise, longitudinal rockers and a straddle seat could be retrofitted for toddlers. Prefer to design and fabricate "davits" for a swinging cradle boat? Just trim off the "legs" that engage the rockers.

A very popular option is a conversion to a proper coffee table. This add-on kit includes a computer-cut top in premium marine-grade clear acrylic, ready to drop into place, plus a sturdy and attractive base that bolts on in place of the rockers.(You can easily switch between cradle boat and coffee table if desired.)

Besides being a perfect gift for the family's newest little boatbuilder and a unique piece of furniture, the CLC Cradle Boat is an ideal first stitch-and-glue project, a perfect practice project for those planning to move up to the Eastport Pram, Passagemaker Dinghy, or any CLC boat kit. The instruction manual is complete and easy-to-follow. ("Step 1: Make baby.")

CLC Cradle Boat Coffee Table

The Cradle Boat is made with the same A+ quality marine-grade okoume plywood as the rest of our boat kits. Plans builders get full-sized patterns for every part. It's fastened together and coated with epoxy for toughness. It will float, but please don't set any children or pets adrift in it.

What builders are saying

Just sending you pics of my first completed stitch-and-glue project---THE PRECIOUS B. Cradle Boat  You will also see a quilt that Sheila made as a finishing touch.  We're waiting for Precious B's new "skipper" to arrive any day. I also wanted to thank you again for the great class last August at WBS.  That, combined with your well-done construction manual made the project very straightforward.  I still made some minor mistakes, but that's just me coming up the learning curve.  The cradle boat has been an enjoyable first boat project and I look forward to doing a "real" boat, probably a Skerry or SW Dory later this year.

My granddaughter loves her CLC Cradle Boat. Assembling from the kit was a “labor of love.” The directions were comprehensive and easy to follow. My next kit will be a canoe for two! Thanks to all at CLC-you were patient with my questions and very helpful when I called for advice.

SUNDIAL is finished and ready for her captain. Built from the kit, it was a breeze. Thanks for making it so easy. The transom was painted by an artist friend of the family. I look forward to my children's children's children enjoying it for generations to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I order this kit?

Click on the Buying Options tab the top left of this page and follow the directions.

If I buy one of your boat kits, what else will I need?

Chesapeake Light Craft kits contain all the parts and materials you need to build the boat. The kit includes pre-cut parts, hardware, epoxy, fiberglass, plans and instructions. Our standard kayak kits also have the seats, hatches, bulkheads, footbraces, and the deck-rigging. About the only thing kits don't include is the final finish: paint or varnish. Your boat's color scheme is entirely up to you.

You'll need a few ordinary tools, like a cordless drill, a decent 5-inch sander, and for most boats a wood plane. You'll need disposables such as sandpaper and paint brushes and mixing cups.

You need a workspace a couple of feet bigger all the way around than the boat you want to build, and you'll need to be able to maintain temperatures between about 55 degrees F and 95 degrees F during steps when epoxy is being applied or curing. Since a lot of boatbuilding gets done during winter, we've written up some tips on how to heat a cold space cheaply, easily, and safely.

How much does this boat weigh and how much can it carry?

The weight and payload of this boat, along with other statistics such length and beam, can be found under Specs in the Specifications section, which is just below the lead image seen at the top of this page.

Can you send me the plans digitally?

Sorry, but until digital rights management technology for marine architectural work catches up to that used for books and music, we are unable to transmit digital plans. Currently, only study plans and manuals can be sent digitally.
