Overview

Why are Stand-Up Paddleboards all the rage? Because they're ridiculously fun, like walking on water.  We made a lot of believers out of folks who have tried out our new Kaholo SUP kits at shows across the country.

It's taken five years and more prototypes than we care to count to refine the two Kaholo SUP boards. Working with surfing and paddleboard guru Larry Froley of Gray Whale Trading in California, we've created two beautiful hollow wooden boards with that rare quality of being fast enough to race but stable enough for first-timers.  Tracking is great and a fine bow with kayak-derived shaping lifts the Kaholo 12-6 and 14 up and over waves.  The tail shape and twin fins facilitate surfing on long swells once your skills build up to that.

With their uncanny speed, the Kaholo 12-6 and Kaholo 14 have found a following among racers.  The 14 is better for larger paddlers (or those who might carry along dogs or small kids).  The 12-6 is more compact, better for smaller-statured paddlers, and it fits in several increasingly popular racing classes.

There are no other SUP boards in the world that are easier for a first-time boatbuilder, or better-looking.  But you don't give up one bit of performance if you build your own Kaholo!

Kits include premium nonskid deck pads, cut to shape, breather tubes, and custom laminated skegs.  The comprehensive instruction manual suggests ways to customize your board with fabrics and other stylish tweaks, as seen in the photo gallery.

Designer John C. Harris counted himself among the skeptics before trying out his first SUP in California in 2006.  "It's the most amazing sensation---as close to walking on water as you're going to get.  But a little faster.  You achieve kayak-like speeds, but your visibility is vastly improved because your eyes are so much higher off the water.  You can see more, see further, and in clear water you have a much better view of sea life than you do in a kayak."

It's also a major workout---every muscle in your body is at work as you ride over waves and work the long-handled SUP paddle.  If taking a walk is healthy, taking a walk on water is healthy AND the view is better.  Harris says he can envision shifting one of his hobbies, which is wandering marinas on foot looking at boats, to wandering amongst the on a Kaholo.

Construction is similar to the popular and highly refined San O' 14 and 16 paddleboards (which are too narrow for stand-up paddling).  The Kaholos are okoume marine plywood, stitched-and-glued together and sheathed in fiberglass and epoxy, with a grid of bulkheads and stiffeners inside to make the boards stiff and light.

Standard Kaholos -- both 12'6" and 14' -- are built entirely by stitch-and-glue methods. with the sides, bottom, and frame structure wired together before gluing.

Kaholo paddleboard under construction

A hybrid version also is available, as seen below on this board built by Paul D. While the deck is strip-built, stitch-and-glue construction is used for the hull.

Kaholo kits come standard with a pair of relatively shallow fins that are intended to be permanently fixed on the underside of the board for tracking in all conditions. Some builders may prefer to use a single, deeper fin for performance, speed, and versatility. This is where the optional Fin Box Kit comes in. This modification should be performed as part of the building process; retrofitting is not recommended.

The Fin Box option allows for the removal and exchange of the fin itself, whether to make storage easier or for optimizing performance by selecting a different fin for different conditions. For example, some paddlers prefer to use a smaller fin for racing and a larger one in heavier chop.

What builders are saying

My 14' Kaholo Stand-Up Paddleboard passed the float test today! Thank you Chesapeake Light Craft for making such a wonderful kit. It gave me a much needed nightly stress relief from the job. A fitting quotation, I think: "Happiness lies in the joy of achievement and the thrill of creative effort." --Franklin D. Roosevelt.

We added an extra bulkhead, stringer, and deck pad to our 14' Kaholo Stand-Up Paddleboard so we could use it as a racing tandem.

My wife, Kirs, and I love our 14' Kaholo Stand-Up Paddleboards.  We had not ever tried paddling before we launched our custom boards. It is a fascinating sport. As for the equipment, we could not be happier. The boards are perfect in every way, I even like the sound they make as they glide through the water.  Nothing like a hollow wooden vessel to carry you as you glide!  Our first experience was a success and we didn't even get wet until the end we walked in to see if our feet would feel wet or cold in the frigid water. Surprisingly, we were dry and comfortable the whole time.
Thanks to all for the encouragement while building these boards.  Best Regards, Mike

My Kaholo Stand-Up Paddleboard brought me in for a finish in the top 20 (out of 200 prone and SUP paddlers), and third place in the 50-59 year old division at the Velzy-Stevens Paddleboard Championships in Manhattan Beach / Hermosa Beach, in California. There's nothing quite like paddling your own rig! Thank you, CLC Boats!

I just returned from a trip in North Carolina's Outer Banks. I can tell you that paddling in 63-degree water is a lot more fun than the 40-degree water in upstate New York. Only problem I have with my new Kaholo 14 Stand-Up Paddleboard is that my two CLC  kayaks are feeling neglected. Every April, my brother and I take a kayak trip. This year I made him leave his plastic boat home, I was tired of waiting for him to catch up and made him use one of my small fleet of CLC boats (three so far). With me on my paddle board and him in a CLC kayak he was waiting for me. After kayaking, I find the view from my paddle board eye-opening, I can't tell you how many sting rays I saw. I have paddled 8 times so far and can only feel sorry for my kayaks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I order this kit?

Click on the Buying Options tab the top left of this page and follow the directions.

If I buy one of your boat kits, what else will I need?

Chesapeake Light Craft kits contain all the parts and materials you need to build the boat. The kit includes pre-cut parts, hardware, epoxy, fiberglass, plans and instructions. Our standard kayak kits also have the seats, hatches, bulkheads, footbraces, and the deck-rigging. About the only thing kits don't include is the final finish: paint or varnish. Your boat's color scheme is entirely up to you.

You'll need a few ordinary tools, like a cordless drill, a decent 5-inch sander, and for most boats a wood plane. You'll need disposables such as sandpaper and paint brushes and mixing cups.

You need a workspace a couple of feet bigger all the way around than the boat you want to build, and you'll need to be able to maintain temperatures between about 55 degrees F and 95 degrees F during steps when epoxy is being applied or curing. Since a lot of boatbuilding gets done during winter, we've written up some tips on how to heat a cold space cheaply, easily, and safely.

How much does this boat weigh and how much can it carry?

The weight and payload of this boat, along with other statistics such length and beam, can be found under Specs in the Specifications section, which is just below the lead image seen at the top of this page.

Can you send me the plans digitally?

Sorry, but until digital rights management technology for marine architectural work catches up to that used for books and music, we are unable to transmit digital plans. Currently, only study plans and manuals can be sent digitally.
