Overview
What separates the Surf Scoter 22 Cruiser from the Pilothouse version is its extra 18 inches in the cabin that allows an enclosed head and a larger galley. The cockpit compensates by being 18 inches shorter than it is in the Pilothouse version.
Since it has been over 20 years since Sam Devlin initially conceived of and built the first of his venerable Surf Scoter 22 vessels, he thought it was time to update the design. The Cruiser model has stretched Pilothouse with a neat enclosed head which makes cruising adventures more comfortable for captain and crew! The pilothouse, with6'4" headroom, still has plenty of room for a galley and two helm seats. Under the foredeck, you’ll find sitting headroom in the port and starboard berths. A filler plugged between them makes a huge double berth.
This new model is a bit more beamy than the previous version resulting in more stability that will be appreciated by all. With a 90-hp outboard on the stern, the top speed is 26 mph. At a cruising speed of 18 mph burns, you burn less than 4 gallons of fuel per hour.
Among the many changes in our lives over the last 20 years, it is almost impossible today to buy a 2-stroke outboard engine. Brief forays into small diesel inboards and larger diesel stern-drives have come and gone, and 4-cycle outboards have taken over the market, These days, with the cost of everything boat-related in the far stratosphere price-wise, it makes the most sense to use a 4-cycle as they are wonderfully quiet, smooth running, and efficient. Mounting one on the transom leaves more space in the cockpit to accommodate everything from the activities of fishermen to the additional gear of long-distance cruisers.
The plans are complete for both professional and home builders and have both imperial and metric measurements. Devlin is pleased to have had the chance to revisit and improve this esteemed design, and we hope it allows you to enjoy your time on the water even more than before
