What builders are saying

I just completed my first project, a pair of Wood Duck 10 kayaks for myself and my girlfriend. I chose the design because we're both novice paddlers and she's almost entirely new to smallcraft. Also, we loved the boat's lines. So far she's taken to the water like the proverbial duck herself, and looks quite at home. I've been surprised at the steady rate the duck can cover ground and the payload capacity.

For my girlfriend, her duck is her first boat and an introduction to the fun of messing around in boats. On her behalf especially I want to congratulate you on making a design that first and foremost made her feel at home, secure and comfortable afloat, such an important part of starting out. For my part, I want to express my appreciation to you for drawing such a nicely proportioned little boat: I never tire of looking at them, and one of the great satisfactions of giving one away is being able to see it from a distance as well as from inside when we're out on the water together.

These little boats are easy to move around both in and out of the water and have a way of charming everyone. I'm surprised how many people ask what they're called and compliment their looks: unlike those neon colored plastic boats, paddling one doesn't make me feel like I'm ruining the scenery at all!

Not only was CLC's ordering and delivery quick and easy but the forum and the help line were amazingly helpful for a beginner: the build was an extremely satisfying experience. I think you at CLC have come up with a recipe for success: every customer becomes a willing and enthusiastic representative, and that's good business.

Thanks so much for your good work!

This is my second Wood Duck this year!  I travelled 5,300 miles round trip to Osoyoos, B.C. Canada to build this Wood Duck 10 with my niece.  We had a blast and went from start to launch in only eight days!!!  Love these CLC boats!  This build was an experience neither of us will forget!

I finally finished the Wood Duck 10 kayak for my wife.  She loves it!  It is quite nimble and tracks wonderfully!  Thanks for producing a great kit.

I love my Wood Duck 10.  It's far from perfect, but it floats, doesn't leak, and paddles great.  Even survived my crashing it over a beaver dam.  To my surprise, I got lots of unsolicited compliments from fellow paddlers and even bystanders.  Looking forward to my next paddle!

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I order this kit?

Click on the Buying Options tab the top left of this page and follow the directions.

If I buy one of your boat kits, what else will I need?

Chesapeake Light Craft kits contain all the parts and materials you need to build the boat. The kit includes pre-cut parts, hardware, epoxy, fiberglass, plans and instructions. Our standard kayak kits also have the seats, hatches, bulkheads, footbraces, and the deck-rigging. About the only thing kits don't include is the final finish: paint or varnish. Your boat's color scheme is entirely up to you.

You'll need a few ordinary tools, like a cordless drill, a decent 5-inch sander, and for most boats a wood plane. You'll need disposables such as sandpaper and paint brushes and mixing cups.

You need a workspace a couple of feet bigger all the way around than the boat you want to build, and you'll need to be able to maintain temperatures between about 55 degrees F and 95 degrees F during steps when epoxy is being applied or curing. Since a lot of boatbuilding gets done during winter, we've written up some tips on how to heat a cold space cheaply, easily, and safely.

How much does this boat weigh and how much can it carry?

The weight and payload of this boat, along with other statistics such length and beam, can be found under Specs in the Specifications section, which is just below the lead image seen at the top of this page.

Can you send me the plans digitally?

Sorry, but until digital rights management technology for marine architectural work catches up to that used for books and music, we are unable to transmit digital plans. Currently, only study plans and manuals can be sent digitally.
