The Eyes Have It! Brad and Colin B. Built KeyeYAK, a Wood Duck 12 Hybrid kayak.

Overview

The Wood Duck 12 Hybrid substitutes cedar strips for the standard plywood deck, keeping the stitch-and-glue hull and underbody identical to the standard version of the Wood Duck..  Thus it's a "hybrid" of strip-planking and stitch-and-glue building techniques. Wood Duck Hybrids offer builders with more woodworking skills the opportunity to customize their kayaks with creative strip patterns and designs.

As a curious historical note, "hybrid" as a term describing a plywood kayak with a cedar-stripped deck actually predates the rise of the hybrid automobile.  We still get a lot of emails wondering if the Wood Duck Hybrids are electric-powered (they are not).

The Wood Duck 12 Hybrid is a recreational kayak designed for people of all shapes and sizes to enjoy on the water.  With a big cockpit and ample stability, the emphasis is on comfort.  But these boats really paddle well!  Speed is excellent:  a Wood Duck 12 can cover a lot of miles in a day, while tracking is solid in stiff crosswinds.

Compact, easy-to-launch boats just seem to get used the most.  In a tenth of the time it takes to launch a heavy boat on a trailer or drag the big canoe down the lawn, you can slide one of these little kayaks into the water and be on your way.  Keep your Wood Duck on top of the car, ready to toss into all the interesting creeks in your county.

Capacity is ample and meant to accommodate a broad range of paddlers.  Cockpits are 38 inches long, for easy in and out, and your legs and knees will not be confined.  The Wood Duck 10 will carry paddlers up to 200 pounds, and the Wood Duck 12 will easily handle a 275-pounder, plus gear.  A flush hatch for the rear compartment is standard in all kits; an airtight oval VCP hatch is an option.  In either case, both boats can carry a heavy payload in the fore and aft compartments, enough for picnicking, camping, or a whole lot of fishing gear.

The Wood Duck Hybrid’s hull is identical to the standard Wood Duck’s, with computer-cut BS 1088 Okoume panels assembled with “puzzle joints” so it goes together very, very quickly.  Computer-cut molds are set into the hull with temporary hot glue.  These molds shape and support the deck during construction.  With the kit, we include precision-milled bead-and-cove Western Red and Alaskan Yellow cedar strips.  The strips are milled with a “bead and cove” joint so that one slides into the next for perfect joinery.

Once the deck pattern has been established and glued together, the entire deck is gently taken off the hull and the underside fiberglassed.  The molds are removed from the hull, then the deck is epoxied back in place.  Finally, the top of the strip deck is fiberglassed and the cockpit and hatches are added.

Our strip-built and hybrid kits ship with 50% Western Red and 50% Alaskan Yellow cedar bead & cove strips. Photos on our website and printed materials may show patterns and accent strips with walnut or other materials. Optional walnut strips are available and can be shipped with kit orders.

CLC commissioned designer Eric Schade to draw and prototype the Wood Duck series of kayaks to our specifications.  Eric had a huge hit with his Shearwater kayak designs, also designed for CLC as fast sea kayaks.  He has another huge hit on his hands with this fun, good-looking recreational kayaks that anyone from age 8 to age 80 can enjoy on the water.

What builders are saying

Thought you might like to see the Wood Duck 12 Hybrid that my husband built with our 14-year-old son this winter.  She got a lot of attention on her inaugural voyage.  Interestingly, the Wood Duck turns out to be the fastest kayak we own—what a fun surprise! Thanks for such a fun project and all of your help along the way. The boys had a blast with this and I’m sure that this boat will be treasured for generations.

Launched a Wood Duck 12 Hybrid yesterday behind Weedon island on Tampa Bay in St. Petersburg, Florida. She weighed in at 38.7 lbs. I want to thank you guys for answering all my questions during the build. My wife and I took it paddling on the bayou in the late afternoon and it performed very well. We both find that the boat paddles like a dream and is quite fast

When the pads on my finger tips heal from so much hand sanding, I suppose I'll be looking to order another kayak kit and or Kaholo SUP. The CLC family continues to expand down here. The pram I built in 2007 is doing great. I finally added deck pads and now the dog can stand without slipping.

I just completed my first kayak, a Wood Duck 12 Hybrid. Actually, I built it for my wife. Building this kayak was the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. I can't wait to open the boxes that are sitting in my shop, and start on the second one.

I finished my Wood Duck Hybrid 12 this weekend. Thanks for the kit. Things went well. I followed your manual and when I had questions the support team was there to fill in the blanks. This was my first Hybrid build. I found it easy to put together, creating a good start to a pretty boat. I used your molds for a Nymph a couple years ago so the decking wasn't that big a deal. I liked the bead/cove strips, it seemed to almost snap together. Again, thanks. I'm looking though the catalog for my next project.

I just finished my Wood Duck 12 Hybrid. What a great experience! This was my first boat building project and I loved it. Thanks for a great product. It was a pleasure dealing with you. My daughter and granddaughter enjoyed it, too. We had a ball.

In 2021 I built a Wood Duck 10 Hybrid for my wife and this year's winter project was a Wood Duckling 8 for my granddaughter. I wanted to strip the deck but the Wood Duckling kit doesn't come in a Hybrid configuration. So I temporarily attached the okoume deck from the kit, took a bunch of measurements and then made a series of forms for the stripping operation.

After that, it was just like building the Wood Duck 10 Hybrid, only smaller! I also made a kid-sized Greenland paddle for her to use. I'm very happy with the results and it was so exciting to watch my granddaughter's first tentative strokes in her new boat. I'm looking forward to her having many years of fun in her beautiful boat. Thanks for offering great kits for all ages!

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I order this kit?

Click on the Buying Options tab the top left of this page and follow the directions.

If I buy one of your boat kits, what else will I need?

Chesapeake Light Craft kits contain all the parts and materials you need to build the boat. The kit includes pre-cut parts, hardware, epoxy, fiberglass, plans and instructions. Our standard kayak kits also have the seats, hatches, bulkheads, footbraces, and the deck-rigging. About the only thing kits don't include is the final finish: paint or varnish. Your boat's color scheme is entirely up to you.

You'll need a few ordinary tools, like a cordless drill, a decent 5-inch sander, and for most boats a wood plane. You'll need disposables such as sandpaper and paint brushes and mixing cups.

You need a workspace a couple of feet bigger all the way around than the boat you want to build, and you'll need to be able to maintain temperatures between about 55 degrees F and 95 degrees F during steps when epoxy is being applied or curing. Since a lot of boatbuilding gets done during winter, we've written up some tips on how to heat a cold space cheaply, easily, and safely.

How much does this boat weigh and how much can it carry?

The weight and payload of this boat, along with other statistics such length and beam, can be found under Specs in the Specifications section, which is just below the lead image seen at the top of this page.

Can you send me the plans digitally?

Sorry, but until digital rights management technology for marine architectural work catches up to that used for books and music, we are unable to transmit digital plans. Currently, only study plans and manuals can be sent digitally.
