Overview

Like all of the Wood Ducks, the Wood Duck Double moves with little resistance through the water. Stability is sufficient for stepping down from a low dock, which is always a great test of a kayak's stability.  Tracking is solid, even though we have not fitted this model with a rudder. A rudder is still a nice upgrade to any two-person kayak, as it eliminates the need for committee decision-making on which direction to go from minute to minute.

The Wood Duck Double will take two average-size adults, or a total payload of up to 400 pounds. The essential attributes of our Wood Duck line of kayaks are compact dimensions, comfortable cockpits, faster speed than the average recreational kayak, versatility on the water, handsome looks with great character, and ease of construction.  So harmoniously do these features fit with the needs of recreational kayakers and boatbuilders that we have sold hundreds of Wood Ducks in just a few years.

We began with the Wood Duck 12, then added a 10, followed by the 14-footer.  Eric Schade's 14-foot hull design, meant to create an exceptionally commodious single kayak, struck us as a good starting point for a small two-person kayak.  So Eric tweaked the lines and after several prototypes we're delighted with the result.

At only around 60 pounds, the Wood Duck Double is easy to handle off the water, too, and with an overall length less than 14 feet it is exceptionally handy to transport and store.  We expect to see a great many of these equipped for fishing, and many others with various combinations of children or dogs aboard. Because of the large open volume, we have made watertight bulkheads standard at the bow and stern, with flush hatches for access to the storage compartments.

What builders are saying

My daughter Cristina and I built this Wood Duck Double as a father-daughter project. We made every mistake in the book while building it (and probably came up with a few new ones of our own!), but the fine design of the kayak allowed us to still turn-out a great-looking, sturdy, sea-worthy kayak that the whole family can enjoy.

We took our kayak out to the canals in South Bethany Beach in Delaware and to the nearby Assawoman Bay. The boat is a lot of fun to paddle around in! I confess to more than once putting two adults, a kid, and two small dogs in the kayak's large cockpit during some of our frequent trips around the bay. We received many compliments from owners of the ubiquitous plastic kayaks in the area. Kudos to CLC Boats for this great kayak kit!

In August I built my Wood Duck Double with Eric Schade at the WoodenBoat School.  After numerous skim coats of epoxy, varnish, and then installing the footbrace mounting, yesterday my wife and I had our first outing here in central New Hampshire.  Friends have told me not to take the kayak out on the water, but keep it in the house as a piece of furniture.  Thank you CLC and Eric for a great kayak that makes me proud to take out on the water – not keep in the house.  And thank you Eric for such a memorable and fun week at the WoodenBoat School.

I just finished my Wood Duck Double kayak and am looking forward to using it for the first time.  It required about 90 hours of labor, including finishing, and came together as easily as advertised.  Looks great, too!  Thanks for putting together a fantastic kit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I order this kit?

Click on the Buying Options tab the top left of this page and follow the directions.

If I buy one of your boat kits, what else will I need?

Chesapeake Light Craft kits contain all the parts and materials you need to build the boat. The kit includes pre-cut parts, hardware, epoxy, fiberglass, plans and instructions. Our standard kayak kits also have the seats, hatches, bulkheads, footbraces, and the deck-rigging. About the only thing kits don't include is the final finish: paint or varnish. Your boat's color scheme is entirely up to you.

You'll need a few ordinary tools, like a cordless drill, a decent 5-inch sander, and for most boats a wood plane. You'll need disposables such as sandpaper and paint brushes and mixing cups.

You need a workspace a couple of feet bigger all the way around than the boat you want to build, and you'll need to be able to maintain temperatures between about 55 degrees F and 95 degrees F during steps when epoxy is being applied or curing. Since a lot of boatbuilding gets done during winter, we've written up some tips on how to heat a cold space cheaply, easily, and safely.

How much does this boat weigh and how much can it carry?

The weight and payload of this boat, along with other statistics such length and beam, can be found under Specs in the Specifications section, which is just below the lead image seen at the top of this page.

Can you send me the plans digitally?

Sorry, but until digital rights management technology for marine architectural work catches up to that used for books and music, we are unable to transmit digital plans. Currently, only study plans and manuals can be sent digitally.

Jenkins Boat Works Builds a CLC Wood Duck Double Kayak

The team at Jenkins Boat Works in Lawson, Missouri, built a Wood Duck Double from a set of plans and the manual. While they were building, they recorded the construction process in a series of videos, which are all on You Tube. The first video demonstrates how to transfer the lines of the plans accurately onto sheets of plywood.
