Overview
Our customers have been building and paddling Nick Schade’s Petrel series of sea kayaks designs from our kits for 20 years. Until now, if you wanted one of these thoroughbred kayaks, you had to build it yourself. Now you can save yourself several hundred hours of labor and have Bold Coast Boats build a lightweight and strong composite version for you. Built under the supervision of designer Nick Schade and longtime CLC colleague John Staub, these boats are built to maximize the performance potential of these proven designs. The BCB Petrels are built to be used and abused in ways you might avoid with a wooden kayak you built yourself! Built with all of the intricate attention to detail that Nick and John have acquired from a lifetime of building wooden boats, you will be as proud to own one of these kayaks—and to paddle it—as if you had built it yourself.
The Petrel Play fits in a cross-over space between recreational kayaks and sea kayaks. It is stable and roomy enough for novice paddlers and those who enjoy relaxing paddles in sheltered water. Yet the Petrel Play is responsive and seaworthy enough for rough open water, surfing, or fun in tide races.
A Kayak that Reads Your Mind
The hull of the Petrel Play has a flattened V bottom with a rounded chine forward transitioning to a hard chine aft. This results in very solid stability while allowing easy leaning for carved turns. The Petrel Play is full in the bow with plenty of buoyancy to rise over waves. Thanks to plenty of rocker the Petrel Play is easier to turn when exploring tight spots, but has nice balanced tracking for venturing offshore.
This is an all-around fun kayak to paddle. Beginners and novices will feel comfortable with the stability. It has a genuinely roomy cockpit, but experienced paddlers will find solid surfaces for their knees and thighs to grip while playing out in the rough stuff. The transitioning chine allows a skilled paddler "point-and-shoot" instinctive turning with just a slight lean.
