Overview
Nick Schade’s line of strip-planked Greenland-style sea kayaks are renowned for sophisticated performance on the water, beautiful lines, and sculptural hull details. But strip-planked boatbuilding is not for everyone. Novice woodworkers and weekend hobbyists with limited free time may be reluctant to take on the complex strip-planked Petrel kayak design. Nick's solution is a series of Petrels built stitch-and-glue style, with great pains taken to retain the strip-planked original's point-and-shoot handling.
This 16' x 21" [4.9m x 53cm] stitch and glue plywood kayak is adapted for comfort and responsiveness in all kinds of sea conditions. The nearly plumb bow and stern provide a long waterline in a compact package, giving the Sport SG a good turn of speed in a manageable size. Steady and reassuring stability eases anxiety in bumpy water. A roomy cockpit accommodates larger paddlers and allows quick ingress and egress.
There's lots of rocker for agility and less wetted surface. Nick's signature transitional chine — double forward and single in back — enables precise edging control for carving turns. Ample capacity to carry gear makes the Petrel Sport a great boat for multiday trips.
This design can be built with flush wooden hatches, or the watertight rubber hatches typical of production sea kayak designs. Drawings for either option are included.
